Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher

Timeline of events so far:
  • Clay recieves the shoebox filled with Hannah's tapes unsure of why or how he has them.
  • Tape 1, side A; Hannah explains that the tapes are the 13 reasons why the people in the tapes made her commit suicide. Reveals Justin Foley as the first hand in her death by creating the lie of how things went down in the park.
  • Cont. Clay travels to the first star on the map he recieved several days before Hannah's death. The first marker is her house.
  • Tape 1, side B; Hannah reveals Alex Standall as the second person that caused her death due to his list of who's hot and who's not. She says if he didnt make that list and if Justin hadn't lied the rest of the event could have never occured.
  • Cont. Clay goes to the second star on the map the Blue Spot Liquor, the place Hannah always went and bought an orange soda and a candy bar from Wally the keep. Hannah tells of one boy who is mentioned later in the tapes came in to the Blue Spot and harrased her because of Alex's list.
  • Tape 2, side A; Hannah explains Jessica Davis' part in her death at first they were almost friends due to Ms. Antilly setting them up.

  1. Clay Jensen had a crush on Hannah and they had made out a week before her suicide and has no idea why he has the tapes. Justin Foley was Hannah's first crush and boyfriend at the new school but then he sparked a lie which turned her into a slut. Alex Standall created a list of who's hot and who's not putting Hannah's name in the top of the hot, while Jessica Davis' in the top of the not, making the snowball grow bigger. Jessica Davis was at first Hannah's friend but then after Alex wrote the list they were no longer friends. Mr. Porter was the guidance councler for kids with names A-G after Ms. Antilly left.
  2. Many events have surprised me within Thirteen Reasons Why, when Justin started the lie of how he put his up her shirt turning her character into a slut. How Alex's list was more of the cause then Alex's himself and how Jessica was new to the school as well. They were becoming friends but then the list came inbetween them.
  3. The very last person, you almost seem to know what Mr. Porter did but we wont find out until the very end.
  4. Yes, this is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read, it has suspense, mystery, death, and leaves you full of questions making it almost impossible to put the novel down.
Kalie: I did enjoy the book very much. It caught my attention after the first tape started. I would say that this is one of my favorite books now. It is very suspenseful and it makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens.
So far Clay Jensen has recieved Hannah Baker's package with the 7 tapes and 13 sides and has listened to five of the sides. The first person was Justin, Hannah's first new boyfriend at her new school. They met at the park one day at the rocket slide which Hannah had been dreaming about since she met him, how perfect her first kiss would be. They met just like she dreamt, she said im coming down and he said ill catch you. She slides down and kisses him right there, the first thing that pops in her mind, "someones been eating chili dogs." The second was Alex who created the whos hot and whos not list, placing Hannah as the "Best ass in the freshman class". Hannah says that maybe if he never would of wrote that list certain events with another reason would of never happened. It wouldnt of gave him permission to walk up to her and slap her butt right in front of Wally in The Blue Liqour. Next was Jessica, at first they didnt want to be friends they didnt expect to be dragged into Ms. Antilly's office to have a meet and greet with the other new kid. At first niether of them wanted to be there, they didn't want any part in it. But after they meet they acutally decide to hangout and walk around town all that day after school. They end up at Monets which becomes their getaway spot. They meet Alex there and all three of them meet there every day to talk about what had happened that day. But then slowly both Alex and Jessica stopped coming. It was because of Alex and his list, Jessica asked Hannah to meet her at Monets and turned the whole situation on her and slapped her in the face. Then came Tyler the peeping tom. Hannah suspected that there was someone outside her window at night so she had Courtney come over to poke a little fun at whoever it was. They acted all arousing and Courtney gave Hannah a massage and all the while you could hear, Click, Click, Click. Then Hannah jumps to the shade pulls the blinds all the way up and there stands Tyler jamming in member back into his pants and running away. So Hannah gets payback and stands right outside Tylers window when recording his tape. next was Courtney the friend that had enough friends but needed a ride. Courtney used Hannah just as another person she made happy and made her reputation bigger. Courtney needed a ride to a party so she asked Hannah, didnt ask if she wanted to go with her just a ride. So she went and just stood around uncomfortable, then she saw Tyler there with his camera she had an idea. She grabbed him and found Courtney and made her take a picture with her something that would eat her because it links Hannah to her and she cant handle that. Then theres Marcus who had Hannah at the top of his list, from the Love Survey. He setup a date for them at Rosie's but was a half hour late then he tried to fondle her because of the list and the rumors. He thought she was easy and almost forces her to let him touch her then she pushes him out of the seat he gets up and calls her a tease then leaves. No one even offers to help her.

The world in Thirteen Reason Why is no different then city or suburban life. I imagne it much like corning, only bigger, and more public transportation. Clay is riding the bus around the city theres parks, restraunts, suburban living, and the school. It is much like real life.

I believe the authors main point is prevent suicide, especially teen suicide. Treat the people in your life how you know you want to be treated. Be honest, respectful, actually care about the people around you. Everyone needs help even if they don't ask for it, Hannah was pushed to the edge then kicked off. All she needed was truth and caring. All she got were rumors surrounding her, people using her, people lying about her, and people trying to take advantage of her.

A non-fiction topic in Thirteen Reasons Why is teen suicide. It is a real thing, its the third leading cause of death for perlosons 15-21 right behind accidents and homocides. Teens have an extraordinary amount of pressure on them no matter what the cause. Divorce, stress, relationships, violence at home, inability to do well in school, kids just lose hope. Sometimes no one gives them hope, they get worse and worse until they finally just give up. We need to prevent this, this is the only life we have.
